Camera sales increase with mirrorless lenses growing in popularity
Data provided by the Camera and Imaging Products Association along with positive sales figures for Canon and Nikon, show that camera sales, especially for mirrorless models, are on the rise.
The first half of 2022 saw camera sales increase gradually since February. In June 2022, shipments of cameras were at their highest since the start of Covid-19 in March 2020.
Shipments of compact cameras and DSLRs have been declining. However, demand for mirrorless interchangeable cameras is increasing, with 9% more sales than 2021 and 34% in “value terms”. Mirrorless products comprise nearly 50% of all camera sales in terms of units, with DSLRs and compact cameras making up the other 50%.
Research from CIPA demonstrates that from January to June 2022, compact camera shipments were valued at 28 billion yen (approx. €204 million), DLSRs at 40 billion yen (approx. €291 million) and mirrorless camera shipments were valued at 210 billion yen (approx. €1.5 billion).
Meanwhile, production figures demonstrate that mirrorless camera shipments increased 19% between January and June this year in unit terms, and increased 38% in value terms.
Industry leaders Canon and Nikon are also enjoying positive business in 2022. In a statement acquired by DPReview, Canon said “the camera market has largely bottomed out at its current size […] going forward, we expect the professional and advanced amateur segment to expand further and that products will become more highly developed. Accordingly, we expect the overall market to grow from now on”.
“Supported by strong sales of interchangeable lenses, we posted double–digit growth in both sales and profit, and our operating profit ratio increased to 16.1%”.
