At Sorama, it is our mission to make the world sound right. We’ve been doing so for the past 15 years. Founded in 2009, our founder and CEO, Rick Scholte, started this mission with a clear goal: to make sound insightful. Since then, we’ve reached many milestones that have shaped Sorama into what it is today. We contribute to a better-sounding world by driving innovation that helps people truly understand sound. Because sound matters, more than most people realize.

Noise pollution is the second most harmful environmental factor for humans, after air pollution. And yet, most people don’t even notice it. That’s because sound is invisible. But our bodies do respond to it, especially when we’re exposed for too long. Ambient noise from traffic, public transportation, or even the hum of consumer goods enters our bodies without us being aware. It doesn’t hurt, but the stress builds over time. This long-term exposure can lead to cardiovascular diseases, and in some cases, even certain forms of cancer. The health risks are becoming clearer, but public awareness is still low.

This is where Sorama steps in. We help visualize sound so people can see what they’re dealing with, and do something about it. Sound, just like light, travels in waves. We measure those waves using sound cameras equipped with many small microphones. By coloring in the sound, we create a heatmap-like visualization that shows exactly where sound is coming from and how it’s behaving. This visualization empowers environmental specialists, product developers, researchers, and engineers to target sound sources with precision and reduce unwanted noise efficiently and effectively. We call it noise mapping, and it’s helping build a quieter world.

Over the years, we’ve seen amazing environmental benefits from our technology. Our industrial customers use acoustic monitoring to detect gas leaks in very early stages, reducing the loss of energy and other valuable resources. Inspections based on sound also reduce the need to send people into hazardous areas, making dangerous work safer. And by spotting issues early, the negative environmental impact is minimized. But it doesn’t stop there. As noise pollution is lowered, the environment becomes more livable, and biodiversity increases. Wildlife such as bats, birds, and marine life enjoy larger and more natural habitats to thrive in. We’ve seen this in practice, and it’s a powerful example of how sound insight leads to real-world results.

We believe that every person, no matter where they are in the world, deserves to live in an environment that sounds right. Being overexposed to noise should not be the norm. That’s why we are committed to bringing the best possible technology to market, so that everyone can benefit from actionable sound insights that improve mental and physical health.
