Since the beginning of the millennium, societies, economies, and the earth itself have been subject to disruptions of increasing frequency and severity. Each evolves differently from the others, but many disruptions have overlapping consequences that can be long lived and are not completely understood at the time of impact. The context within which these disruptions occur, furthermore, is an ever-present climate crisis, whose effective mitigation will require a global transition to a low-carbon economy. And this at a time when companies, despite a multitude of challenges and uncertainties with which they are confronted, actually have to invest even more in the topic of sustainability, establish new business models and test completely new approaches. Rebecca Steinhage will give an overview of what this means for a family-owned company like Miele, what answers the household appliance company has to these challenges and what significant role employees do play in this endeavour.

ESG is at the heart of the property industry across design, build and operations, and with everyone now watching the thermostat - never before has there been such a focus to ensure homes are energy efficient and bills are as low as possible. Building operations, heating, cooling, lighting, alone contributes 28% of global emissions. Sustainable technology is driving device-to-device connectivity, and the opportunity lies in the synchronization of different devices to work simultaneously for efficiency gains.

    • The newest/latest sustainable tech trends for the home/working environment
    • What are the big players putting forward for your home?
    • The deployment of alternative forms of energy, such as solar panels

Did you know that there are over 40 different materials in a smartphone? This hands-on workshop gives participants the opportunity to learn more about these materials and their impact on the environment and the people working to extract them. During the workshop, Fairphone's experts will guide participants through the process of identifying and extracting valuable materials inside a smartphone. If we design, handle and dismantle our non-functioning devices in the right way, many of the materials inside can be recycled and re-used, lowering the social and environmental footprint of our electronics. Each participant can dismantle an old smartphone themselves. Phones and tools will be provided, but participants are invited to also bring their own broken devices to the workshop.

Whilst we understand that sustainability is an extremely important issue, humans are notoriously slow to adopt to change, and this is disruptive change that is moving at a rapid pace with urgency. Organisations are already grappling with extremely challenging trading conditions, post-Covid-19, Energy crisis, inflation, staffing issues - and as a result there can be a perceived level of reluctance/skepticism in adopting a sustainable approach. In this session we take a deep dive into how sustainability is being embedded into the heart of companies strategies and what the challenges are?

    • The Green Business opportunity ? the key areas to explore
    • The board room challenge – putting sustainability higher up the priority list
    • Case studies of where organisations are seeing success with adopting a Green strategy

Sustainable investing has become increasingly attractive to investors driven by a desire to align their values with investment goals. But with so many providers and investment options out there, it can be difficult to know where to begin and how to measure real impact. With the added uncertainty about regulations, greenwashing and complexities to navigate in ESG ratings, we hear from investment gurus on: what's holding back investment and innovation? What are the most effective strategies for evaluating the environmental impact and financial performance of green investments? What can be done to overcome the perception that green investments offer a lower return? And how are investors staying ahead of the curve to maximise their impact and returns?

    How can Emobility power sustainability

Emobility is being embraced across different modes of transport for its energy saving abilities. Electric vehicles are hailed as the future of the automotive industry, with their rechargeable batteries and low Co2 emissions being better for the environment. As we embark on this journey we examine the challenges in decarbonising transport, examining the impact of recent EU initiatives across policy, and implementation from a business and individual perspective.

As the automotive industry moves towards electrification at break neck speed, can we expect the same from consumers? Consumers in the market for a new vehicle are enthusiastic about EVs for their sustainability promises, petrol savings, and futuristic tech. But consumers are also recognizing a number of barriers to ownership including inflationary/price pressures and infrastructure shortcomings. Further, the pace of embracing electrification is unequal around the world. In this session, we will understand the global consumer view of this enormous opportunity and how manufacturers and marketers can help close the gap with future EV owners.

Annually, nearly 400,000 tons of electronic waste are generated from the 38 most significant household appliances in Germany alone, according to the “Repairing instead of throwing away 2022/2023" study conducted by the insurer Wertgarantie.

The topic of "repairability" is already on the political agenda in many countries as well as at the EU level. Konrad Lehmann, board member of Wertgarantie, demonstrates how the issue has been successfully advanced in practice.  The fundamental principle of Wertgarantie's insurance products is based on the idea of promoting repairs and thereby extending the lifespan of devices. In the interest of sustainability, Wertgarantie also supports repairing devices even when a replacement would be more cost effective for the insurance.

Konrad Lehmann provides insight into the topic of "Reparing instead of throwing away" and illustrates how manufacturers, retailers, and consumers can collaboratively contribute to reducing the volume of electronic waste.

Global supply chains are experiencing extreme volatility adding more complexity to forecasting and contingency plans. Businesses need to remain as competitive as possible, but also face pressure to reduce their environmental impact. How can the industry embed a sustainability strategy into a supply chain, and what are the key areas to measure as part of a continuous improvement plan? We take a look at some tech success stories where software and modelling tools have been used to trial where improvements have been made, and how automation can be used for energy savings.

One of the major criticisms aimed at the tech industry is the volume of electronic waste. The UN Published a report in 2020 that found the world was producing a 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste per year, the equivalent of over a million Boeing 737s.

This special session will be delivered by Oliver Wyman and gfu as they examine what it takes for the Circular Economy to become a real solution to the e-waste problem? They will share an indepth European survey on these findings with expert interviews, including NGO/UN data on this issue.
