Fireside chat focuses on cutting red tape, AI, and digitalization

On the first official day of the trade fair, IFA Berlin—the world’s largest event for consumer electronics, home appliances, and future tech—focused on the challenges facing Germany as a hub for digital technology and industry. In a fireside chat titled "Digital Policy Put to the Test," Federal Digital Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger and Dr. Reinhard Christian Zinkann—Managing Partner at Miele and Spokesperson for the Home Appliances Division at ZVEI (the German Electrical and Digital Industry Association)—discussed the prerequisites for innovation and competitiveness. Journalist and TV presenter Pinar Atalay moderated the discussion on the Innovation Stage.

A key focus of the conversation was the reduction of bureaucracy that stifles innovation, as well as the need for appropriate regulatory frameworks. From the perspective of Dr. Zinkann—a ZVEI board member and Miele partner—these represent central challenges at both the national and European levels.

Germany’s role in the development of artificial intelligence models and the opportunities presented by digital transformation were also discussed. The Federal Minister advocated for speed, technological openness, and courage—on the part of both companies and the state. Dr. Zinkann emphasized that the electrical industry is rising to the challenge of global competition but called for fair conditions for all market participants. German and European companies invest in quality, sustainability, and innovation. To ensure this does not result in a competitive disadvantage, the same rules must apply to—and be enforced for—all providers.

Market surveillance, in particular, needs to become more effective. Digitalization offers concrete opportunities to ensure that products offered on the EU market—regardless of whether they were manufactured in Europe or in third countries—comply with European requirements; for instance, customs and market surveillance operations become more effective through the use of digital tools. This is a crucial prerequisite for the competitiveness of the industry in Germany and Europe.
